We first demonstrate why the conjecture follows easily for self-similar sets with positive Hausdorff measure. In the general case, Hochman's seminal result shows that exponential separation implies there is no dimension drop. This verifies the conjecture for self-similar sets defined by using algebraic parameters. We demonstrate that the result is still too weak to address the full conjecture.
