Stefano Olla

I will take the example of a one dimensional system of anharmonic oscillators (like the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam model) to explain the macroscopic evolution under hyperbolic or diffusive scaling of space-time. I will also illustrate the precise definition of local equilibrium, the connection with the „ergodicity of the infinite system”, the time evolution of thermodynamic entropy and the „second principle of thermodynamics”.

Bogdan Cichocki

I shall speak about algebraic varieties being projective, fulfilling Chevalley Condition or having finitely many maximal quasi-projective open subsets. I will start by giving the basic definitions and introducing known results and follow with a relatively simple example of a non-projective surface fulfilling Chevalley Condition and thus having infinitely many maximal quasi-projective open subsets. I will use mainly elementary methods and should be at least partially understood by a broad audience.

Krzysztof Szajowski

A version of the selection problem is considered. The ranks of items, whose values are independent, identically distributed random variables X1,X2,...,Xn from a uniform distribution on [0;1], are observed sequentially by graders. They have to select exactly one item, when it appears, and receives a payoff which is a function of the unobserved realization of random variable assigned to the item diminished by some cost.

It is an inverse to the Robbins' problem in which the values of random variables are observed and the aim is to minimize expected rank. Both problems will be subject of analysis on the lecture.

These problems have long history but still are open questions and perspective of further research on foundations of the problems and their applications.

Galina Filipuk

I shall speak about a linear second order ordinary differential equation called Heun's equation. Its solution, Heun's function, is a classical linear special function. I shall present some properties of solutions to Heun's equation and explain relation to a nonlinear special function, the Painlevé transcendent.

Tomasz Piasecki

I will start with giving an introduction to the mathematical theory of compressible flow. I will explain briefly how the Navier-Stokes equations are derived and present known results for the Navier-Stokes system for compressible flows. These results, that are mainly due to E. Feireisl and P.-L. Lions, are now considered classical, but they were developed quite recently, mainly in the years 1990-2000. In the second part of my talk I will shortly present the topic of my phd dissertation concerning the steady compressible flow with slip boundary conditions and the results I have obtained in the last two years.

Balázs Bárány

Let {Si} be a set of similarities in Rd, we call this set as an iterated function system (IFS). We will study some properties of the "self-similar" measure of the IFS. We will define the Hausdorff dimension and the local dimension of this measure and we will study the Hausdorff dimension of the points, where the local dimension is given. We will give a formula and prove it.

Marcin Sabok

We say that a mathematical statement is absolute if whether it is true or false does not depend on the universe we live in. I would like to show basic examples and applications of absolute statements. I will show for example how to use absoluteness to prove that any analytic set on the real line is Lebesgue measurable.

Bogdan Bojarski

The D. Egorov and N. Luzin structure theorems for measurable functions are fundamental for Real Analysis and the theory of Function Spaces. In the lecture we will discuss the connections of Egorov--Luzin theory with the H. Whitney theory of smooth functions on closed subsets of Rn and the extension of Denjoy--Marcinkiewicz--Zygmund theory of approximate Peano differentiability to arbitrary measurable subsets of Rn.

Paweł Hitczenko

We will discuss some applications of probabilistic methods in enumerative combinatorics. As an illustration we present a limit theorem for the number of parts in a random integer partition into parts whose sizes are restricted to a proper subset of natural numbers.

Adam Osękowski

If u is a harmonic function on a unit disc and v is its conjugate vanishing at 0, then, as proved by Riesz, the p-th norm of v is controlled by a p-th norm of u, p>1. For p=1, Kolmogorov established the corresponding weak type estimate. During the talk we will explain the connections between the best constants in these inequalities and certain optimal stopping problems for two-dimensional Brownian motion. Furthermore, we will present the extensions of the results above to the case of orthogonal harmonic functions on Euclidean domains.

Maciej Malicki

I will present a very brief introduction to the theory of Borel reducibility, which can be thought of as a novel and powerful approach to classification (and non-classification) problems. After defining basic notions and stating some of the fundamental results, I will discuss examples coming from topology, group theory, metric spaces and functional analysis to illustrate how the theory of Borel reducibility is applied in various branches of mathematics.

Piotr Rybka

Iwo Białynicki-Birula

Uncertainty relations highlight the unusual features of quantum theory. The traditional formulation employs straightforward mathematics (Schwartz inequality) but it has some deficiencies. In this lecture I will use the Shannon and Renyi entropies to remove some of the shortcomings of the standard form of uncertainty relations. The new form of the uncertainty relations requires more sophisticated mathematics. I will also mention some open problems.

Emily Burgunder

Lie idempotents are powerful tools in algebra, combinatorics, and topology. We will recall two well-known Lie idempotents, namely the Eulerian idempotent and the Dynkin idempotent, and give two applications. The first application is in algebra, where the Eulerian idempotent can be used to split the cyclic homology. The second application is in harmonic analysis where the interplay of the both idempotents is used to construct explicitly all solutions of the first equation of the Kashiwara-Vergne conjecture.

Joanna Janczewska

In my talk I will focus on finite-time blow-up's for some nonlinear parabolic equations and systems. Explosions of solutions to parabolic (possibly degenerated) systems attract the attention of mathematicians (and not only) for several reasons. The most classical one is that it is an argument for non-existence of solutions to parabolic problems. On the other hand more recent interests in this area are connected with possible applications to differential geometry (see for instance the famous Perelman's proof of Poincaré's conjecture). Astrophysicists interprete finite time blow-up of the systems of self-gravitating particles as gravitational collapse, biologists want the aggregation phenomenon to be described in this way.

My talk will start with some basic results concerning finite-time blow-up for semilinear heat equation in a bounded domain with either Neumann or Dirichlet zero boundary conditions. As a next step I intend to include the energy-dependent condition for initial data providing occurence of finite-time singularity. Next I'm going to review some recent results (Jazar, Kiwan, Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré, Anal. Nonl. 2008) on the study of the semilinear heat equation preserving the mass. At the end I would like to describe some recent results on finite-time singularities in a quasilinear Smoluchowski-Poisson system.
